Am I An Alcoholic?

What is the role that alcohol, or really any substance, plays in your life? Is it something that easily lifts out, or are your relationships, lifestyle choices, and habits built around it?

Laura McKowen is a sober writer and speaker, who highlights the role that social norms and media messages play in our drinking habits. She writes about joy-filled sober living, choosing not to numb and blunt with substances- with or without the label of “addict’ or “alcoholic”. This blog entry of hers addresses the question that many struggle with: what is the line between problem drinking and normal, acceptable drinking? As she puts it,
“The normal question is, is this bad enough for me to have to change?”

While you may not agree with all of her views, McKowen’s blog and the questions it raises are thought-provoking and helpful. As we continue in spring- a season of renewal, growth, and change- perhaps we could consider whether our choices are good enough to stay the same, or if they are keeping us from a fuller, more alive life.
