Back to the Present

It is often helpful to plan for the future, or pre-decide how we would like to handle certain situations. But sometimes when we are thinking about the future, we can get a case of the “what ifs.” This can often lead us down a spiraling road to panic, fear, and insecurity.

A lot of our anxious thoughts involve ruminating on the past or thinking about the future. Because of this, it is helpful to bring ourselves back into the present moment.

How do we bring ourselves back to the present? A great way to do this is by engaging in mindfulness exercises. One easy mindfulness exercise that you can do anywhere is to focus on your breath. Follow the path of your breath, as it comes in on your inhale, and out on your exhale. Something as simple as this can help bring your awareness to the present moment.

Thinking about the past or future is not inherently negative. But when it consistently takes us from the present, it is preventing us from really living. Remaining present-centered is an ongoing challenge, but it is possible to train our minds to engage in the present and gain control over where we direct our attention.
