Rise in Teen Anxiety and Depression

Teens today face a greater risk of struggling from mental health issues than in the past. Rates of teen anxiety and depression are at an all-time high. While there are many teens struggling with mental health concerns, sometimes it can be difficult to differentiate what is a mental health issue from normal adolescent behavior.

One sign that a teen may be struggling with a mental health issue is noticeable changes in their behavior, such as ongoing isolation and withdrawal, changes in sleeping or eating patterns, and increased risk-taking. There could also be a change in their academic performance.

Another sign that a teen may be facing a mental health concern is a change in their appearance. This can include wearing long sleeves when it’s hot outside, rapid change in weight, and decreased grooming or self-care. In addition, there could be a change in their friend group. Remember that changes are not always obvious. Also, one small difference does not necessarily indicate the presence of a mental health issue.

So, what can you do? Teens want you to sit with them, validate their feelings, follow up, and check in. Also, it’s ok if you don’t know all the answers.

If a teen indicates that they are harming themselves or expressing thoughts of dying or the desire to die, it is time to get parents and mental health professionals involved. Fortunately, teens do not have to suffer in silence, and anxiety and depression are treatable.
