Is Your Child Stressed? Part 3

(This is the third in a 4 part blog series…)

Today we will continue our Blog Series on Recognizing the Signs of Childhood Stress .  We are focusing on how you can help your child cope with their stress. Here are some practical ways for you and your child to reduce and alleviate stress.

Coping With Stress

  • Help your children talk about what is bothering them. Instead of saying “what is wrong?”, ask, “How are things going at school with your teacher?” Do not criticize what your children say or they will learn not to tell you things that bother them.
  • Encourage vigorous physical activities like bike riding, hiking, swimming, or team sports.
  • Spend special one-on-one time with your child. This allows for time to have fun together as well as talk.
  • Encourage healthy eating. Having a balanced diet helps their bodies manage stress well.
  • Gentle physical touch is a great stress reliever. A short shoulder or back rub shows you care.
  • Teach your child that mistakes are ok. Let them know that even you make mistakes and that mistakes are for learning.
  • Be clear about rules and consequences. Let them know, specifically, what is expected and come up with consequences for specific misbehaviors. Then, follow through.
  • Teach ways of handling different situations. Talk through and role play with your children how they can handle a stressful situation
  • Tell stories about dealaing with stress.
